Irish Beaten By Glaucia Brace

Republic of Ireland U-17s were defeated 2-1 by Brazil in their opening World Cup game in Trinidad.

Brazilian striker, Glaucia scored the game's opening goal after just four minutes, before Raheny United midfielder, Siobhán Killeen scored a superb equaliser in the 58th minute. However, Glaucia was on-hand once again to regain the lead for Brazil two minutes later with a superb strike inside the box.

Ireland got off to the worst possible start and found themselves one goal behind after just four minutes. Brazilian captain Thais collected the ball on the right wing from a throw and played a neat ball into striker Glaucia in the Irish box who swiveled passed her marker and powered her right-footed shot into the back of the net from a tight angle despite the best efforts of Irish keeper Grace Moloney.

The Reading keeper was called into action three minutes later when she made a superb save from close range to deny defender, Ingrid following a Brazilian corner.

Ireland had their first real effort on goal in the 12th minute when Aileen Gilroy played a clever pass from a corner to Siobhán Killeen at the edge of the Brazilian box but her effort went just over the bar.

Brazil should have doubled their lead in the 20th minute, but for the heroics of Irish keeper, Grace Moloney. Brazil's Luana found herself all alone on the edge of the six yard box following a deflected shot and her powerful, goal-bound effort was spectacularly saved by Moloney who cleared the danger.

While Brazil remained a constant threat in attack, they were often frail in defence and after 30 minutes, a Megan Campbell free-kick caused mayhem in their opponents box with Denise O'Sullivan and Jennifer Byrne missing the ball by inches.

Moloney was once again Ireland's saviour in the 35th minute when Brazil midfielder, Jucinara broke down the left and drilled a powerful shot towards Moloney's near post but the Reading keeper was on hand to tip it around for a corner.

Ireland started the second-half strongly and they scored the equaliser through Raheny's Siobhán Killeen with a spectacular effort from just outside the box in the 58th minute. Killala midfielder, Aileen Gilroy broke down the right flank and cleverly delivered the ball to Killeen who was unmarked at the edge of the area and her first time shot nestled into the back of the net giving the keeper no chance.

Brazil however regained the lead two minutes later as Glaucia scored her second goal of the game with an audacious effort. She collected the ball directly from a corner and coolly curled it into the top corner of the net, giving Moloney no chance in goal.

Irish defender, Jennifer Byrne came to Ireland's rescue in the 67th minute when, Glaucia who was going in search of a hat-trick tricked her way past the Irish defence and she slotted the ball over the on-rushing Grace Moloney but Byrne was on-hand to head clear a certain goal.

Ireland could have restored parity in the 68th minute as Dora Gorman burst through the Brazilian defence and played a neat ball to Stacie Donnelly from ten yards out but she hesitated in front of goal and her return pass to Gorman was cleared as far as Ciara Grant at the edge of the box but her powerful effort went just over the bar.

Irish manager, Noel King made three changes in the closing stages as Rianna Jarrett, Claire Shine and Rebecca Kearney all came on to bolster the Irish attack but Brazil held out for the win which puts them in driving position in Group D.
