Spain were 4-1 winners over Japan in Group C, despite having fewer efforts on goal. Three goals in a 13-minute first half spell put them in control, as Iraia Perez, Alexia Putellas and Laura Gutierrez all struck. Raquel Pinel increased their lead on 55 minutes, with Kumi Yokoyama replying immediately.
In the other Group C game, New Zealand paid the price for failing to make the most of an early lead against Venezuela, eventually going down 2-1.
Kate Loye gave them a good start with a 10th-minute opener but a brace by Ysaura Viso, with goals coming midway through each half, produced a suprise win for the South Americans.
After going behind early on against Brazil, the Republic of Ireland replied but were soon trailing for a second time in the Group D encounter. Siobhan Killeen cancelled out Glaucia's 4th-minute opener on 58 minutes, only for Glaucia to ger her second just after the hour mark.
Canada snatched a 1-0 victory over Ghana, with their only shot on target in the whole game. Haisha Cantave's 54th-minute effort gave the Canucks the points.
