Friendly Fixtures Focus

With the Premier League kick-off just days away, many sides completed their pre-season preparations with friendlies on Sunday.

Leeds United lost 2-1 to Liverpool, who scored through a powerful Jo Traynor header from Nicky Harden's corner and then less than a minute later, Gemma Watson struck with a clinical finish. Leeds' determination led to Traynor being unable to deal with a Carla Cantrell through-ball, which she poked past her own keeper.

Sunderland hit Leeds City Vixens for six, with two goals each from Natalie Gutteridge and Kelly McDougall, followed by singles from Jordan Atkinson and Sophie Williams.

Gillingham held Watford 2-2, with Ashlee Hincks opening the scoring for the Gills via the post, before Paige Logie headed home Kate Owen's cross to equalise. Hincks again scored before half-time, rounding Watford keeper Chloe Crook, but Jadine Madden headed the equaliser from Cally Rowell's corner with 10 minutes left.

A Sian Larkin brace secured a share of the spoils for Colchester United, as they held National Division Nottingham Forest to a 2-2 draw.

Leicester City WFC won a double header against Sporting Club Albion at Tipton Town, a 3-1 result for the first team game and a 5-2 success for the Reserves. The Foxes' 1sts were two up after 20 minutes with powerfully struck shots from 25 yards by Natasha Meade and Zira Handley. Jordan Riteamins pulled a goal back but Maz Gauntlett scored near the end to increase City's lead. In the Reserves' match, Lauren Handley, Louise Ward, Nicole Dale (pen), Brogan Jones and Maz Gauntlett scored, with Naomi Melborne and Natasha Baptiste on target for Albion.

Havant & Waterlooville hit seven goals without reply at Frome Town. Stacie Murray netted a first-half hat-trick, Lizzy Laws converted a penalty, Becki Bath and Charley Wilson also found the net and there was also an own-goal.

Plymouth Argyle enjoyed a fine performance against Bristol's new crop of Academy players, as goals from Katie Middleton, Tash Knapman and a big deflection from a shot by Charlie Carter saw the visitors take the spoils in a highly competitive match at Filton College.

West Ham United had a 7-0 victory against Southampton Saints, with two goals a piece for Nina Downham and Gemma Shepherd, with Carly Roache, Emma Thomas and Tracey Duxbury also getting in on the act. The Hammers, two up at half time, stretched away from their South Coast visitors in the second spell. The Reserves won 3-1 at C&K Basildon, where Jo Wosahlo, Danica Revell and Sinead Redford all found the net.
