We KICK! Moulton Ladies FC

Moulton manager, Kathryn Lusk introduces us to her team, who are only in their second season.

How did the club and particularly your team get started?

Moulton Ladies were formed in 2010 and currently compete in the Northamptonshire Women's League. Moulton FC were in search of a Ladies team to which the under 16 girls team could step up to. There remained a nucleus of players from a youth team from an adjoining village, where an arrangement with another ladies team hadn't worked out. Kathryn Lusk (manager) was approached to run the team following previous success with other teams and she brought across some experienced players - the rest is history!

For the first time ever, Moulton Ladies will compete in this season's FA Women's Cup, as well as the League and County Cup. Moulton Ladies have already had a successful pre-season competing in tournaments all over the country and were crowned champions in the Chinor 6-a-side tournement in May 2011. Moulton Ladies were also crowned champions at Pete Brewin's Charity Tournament in August 2011.

Tell us some of your top nicknames and why players have them and why some maybe don't?

We have such a wide range of random nicknames at Moulton including:

Ski (but she dosen't ski)
Dave (but she hates it!)
Roo
Wilma (but she dosen't like the Flinstones!)
Milfred
Goalie (who isn't the goalie but used to be - you can imagine the confusion on the other team's faces!!)

All have a lot of history behind them...some that have emerged since Moulton - others that were already in place.

Do you have a fairly settled team?

The players in our team have changed a lot since last season (our first season) but nevertheless this season the new players have settled in very well and quicker than anticipated. We are fortunate at Moulton that we have a very successful U-16 side that feed into our ladies team, hence this season we obtained six new faces courtesy of them. This has not only meant six new players but six new characters as well - they have already proved their footballing ability and are more than settled and getting used to the ways of the ladies team!

How did the 2010/11 season go for you, what do you expect from 2011/12 and who are your biggest rivals?

In our first season together 2010/11 was very successful - we finished a respectable fourth. This season our aim is to match or better last season's overall position and proceed in all cup competitions. The structure of the county league has changed slightly this season, which should make competition even stronger between the teams.

Tell us a top fact about your team:

We have two police officers in our team!

Who is your captain and tell us a bit about her (nickname, background, what she's good at and not good at)?

Amy Willis (Wilma) is our captain - she is our centre midfield dynamo who gives 110% every game and every training session. Wilma scored 30 goals for us last season and has opened her account this season, scoring four goals in five appearences. She leads by example and is respected by her team-mates.

What about your coach/manager - are they serious, funny, good/bad and why?

Our manager is funny (although she thinks she is funnier than she actually is!) She relates well to the team, it probably helps because she plays as well. Everyone always enjoys training and the manager is definetly a big part of the team spirit being so good. The team respect the manager and the decisions she makes.

Tell us a funny moment the team shared:

During pre-season traning we trained at the back of our pitch which is a public field. We always put our stuff together at the side of the pitch, e.g. trainers, bags, drinks etc - so we commenced training and halfway through the session we noticed a dog approaching the us. Fearing for the dog going for the ball we stopped playing, waiting for the dog to pass us. We were patiently waiting for the dog to move on but the dog was no longer after the ball, it moved towards the side of the pitch where all of our belongings were and started sniffing around - nobody really thought anything of it until...it picked up one of the girls' trainers and ran off with it!!

What made this even funnier is Kiki (who's trainer it was) was laughing at the situation along with the rest of the girls until she realised it was hers. Kiki has never moved so fast - she chased the dog (which was at this point the length of a football pitch away) for about five minutes and to her credit came back with her trainer - smelling worse and sloppier than ever before! Priceless!

Who is the team's jock (the fittest) and who is the joker?

Ski is jock of the team - she run's for fun (crazy)! Everyone has their moments being the joker Holly B, Roo, Wilma probably the manager is the biggest joker though!

Does the team/club have an unsung hero?

Alan Aisbett is definately our unsung hero - he is our chairman and does all the stuff behind the scenes. He is always first to get the drinks in after the game as well! He is just like on of the girls!

Who is always first to the bar/on the dancefloor on a team/club night out?

Trish, our centre back, is always first to the bar! There's not a moment when she's not playing football when she hasn't got a bottle of Blue WKD in her hand!! Wilma, our club captain, is always the first to throw some shapes on the dancefloor - genius!
