Rhys Sullivan - Plymouth Argyle LFC Manager

Plymouth Argyle manager, Rhys Sullivan, reflects on his team's South West Combination campaign so far.

How pleased are you with Argyle's current league position and with this season's form?

At the present time, I am very pleased wth the current league position. I do however, feel that we should be much better off than we are, but we dropped a lot of silly points in October, when we were going through a transitional stage at the club,  due to the change of management and playing personnel. I am, however, very confident in the ability of the squad that the coaching staff have worked hard to assemble, and we are aiming for a top four finish. It takes time for new players to gel, but we feel we are now moving in the right direction.

Do you believe the club can still have a say in the title race?

We will definately have a say in the title race. We have to face all of the title challengers at home in the next five weeks, and are confident of picking up points and having a massive say in the final outcome of the league title.

You've been successful in recent years in producing some England youth players. Anymore likely to follow in their footsteps?

There are some very talented youngsters in the Centre Of Excellence set up, and I feel confident more will go on to be rewarded with England honours. The centre do a tremendous job and we are working hard to help and nurture young talent. Indeed, our current first team squad features 3 sixteen year olds who have made the considerable step up from youth football, and we have another 4 graduating and becoming eligible at the moment.

Have there been any major signings or departures this term?

The club lost 9 first team players this summer, the most noticeable being Katie Middleton who left for Premier League Bristol Academy, and Chloe Roberts who accepted an oppurtunity to take up a scholarship in the United States. Several players also left to join local rivals Newquay. There are just four players left who featured regularly in last season's team that finished as runners-up in the league for the third season in a row.

Major arrivals in the summer included striker Laura Gough, but it became clear when I took over the job in October that the team needed improving further. The arrival of Leanne Griffiths, Nat Bavister from Portsmouth, both with Premier League experience, and young centre forward Tash Knapman has added some much needed quality and experience to the squad. Rebecca McMullin has also just returned from Newquay, and we are pleased to welcome her back, The squad are now very settled have a good understanding of each other and play football the right way.

All of the girls have worked very hard this season after the early turmoil, and everyone at the club is very excited with the current situation, and many of the players are thriving at being the underdogs, after three seasons of being expected to be challenging for the title.

Have injuries affected your campaign?

We have been without centre forward Emily Mousley all season due to a cruciate knee injury, and we lost leading scorer Laura Gough due to a heart operation just before Christmas. Thankfully both players have resumed light training, but wiil probably be unavailable for the remainder of this season. Goughy's absence after she had been so prolific was a huge loss, but the emergence of Tash Knapman has help keep us in the hunt.

We also lost Welsh international defender Emma White due to chronic ankle problems when I took over, just as she was beginning to settle in.
