Interview: Jarmo Matikainen (Manager - Wales)

Jarmo Matikainen was appointed manager for Wales' women's national teams yesterday.

When do you get started?
Officially, I will start 4th of October, obviously I will try to see as much of Welsh national team football as possible. I will going to the senior World Cup Qualifying match against Azerbaijan and next week I will try to come to the U-17 friendly with Belgium. But officially I will start in October and we will have some activities in the late Autumn,

Do you know much about the players yet?
I've seen a DVD and know that most of them are playing for clubs that participate in English competition, a couple of them also will be playing for clubs in the new Super League. But otherwise, the next step will be to get to know the players, get to know the staff, see what we have to build on and go from there.

What will be the first things you have to do?
First of all, I will go through the team with the coaching staff and see what possible things we have to build on. Obviously, there's no point to start mending something that's not broken. So, we look at what we have and look at the things that we want to improve and start having the preparations for the next qualification on that platform. I think that's something to do with the people who have been working long term with - and have the insight into - Welsh football. In general, it's very important that the steps that we take will be done in a way that we can have a thorough look at what we have and then set the standard, the aims and targets for the next qualification.

Have you already got any aims in mind for the year ahead?
The main focus will definetly be on the senior team and see that we have the best possible preparation for the next qualification and a good programme, Also, having a thorough look at the players, their situation, the clubs that they are playing in and the individual qualities that they have and go from there on. I think that's the main focus on the forthcoming year.

What would be the highpoint of your coaching career to date?
We (Finland) have had some success druing the last few years, the U-19s in a finals tournament going to the semi-finals, from there the first time our women's team had reached the world championships. Obviously, that was personally very important, to see the girls do so well. But I think that Finland is like Wales - we are small football countries but we are ambitious. What we want to do is to have sustainable development and sustainable success and I think that has to work at all levels. The last ten years I have been working with Finnish women's football and I have been very happy to see a sustainable improvement and that's what I'm looking for here as well.

What would you say was the most successful point in your playing career?
I played from the first year in the Finnish fourth division but from my career it was the first division in 1988, That season with MPS was probably the most pleasurable. I enjoyed it so much, every time I put the boots on, playing at the highest level.
