Obviously we're no different to any other league - and probably better off than some others but its fair to say that unless Spring makes an appearance pretty soon the EMWFL fixture programme will go some way to starting the 'summer league' earlier than planned!
Things have been made worse due to the many County Cup roll-overs we've had to accommodate. The EMWFL has teams from 8 counties so each time a match isn't played it automatically knocks out the next league match. With so many counties to cover its clear to see that it doesn't take long for things like this to really disrupt things - one match rolled over 5 weeks in a row! We've now extended our season into May so hopefully this will give us a life-line and allow everything to finish as planned.
In order to try to keep on top of things we took the decision to postpone our Cup & Plate competitions and put league fixtures in their place. We've now got everything crossed for the 7th March as this is the next round of the competition and if that gets postponed the whole thing may be in jeopardy which will be a real shame - not only because the trophies are on order lol!! - but also because a lot of effort goes in to give our teams a really special day. We're looking at the 25th April for our Finals but obviously this is subject to change.
Anyhow, we'll carry on regardless of the weather and do our best, as that all we can do.
Weather aside, other things are going pretty well. Our divisions are hotting up nicely with 2 out of the 3 having the potential to go to the wire. In the Premier Division Loughborough Students are starting to get their noses in front in their attempts to return to the Midland Combination although Friar Lane can still win promotion if they slip up. Clifton, Gedling and Mansfield are still in with a shout although all longs-shots.
At the moment in Division 1 South its a two-horse race between Hinckley Utd and Long Eaton Utd although there is plenty of football yet to be played so if either suffers a dip in form it would allow the chasing pack to close the gap.
Retford Utd are way in front in Division 1 North due to a terrific return from their goal machine Hayley Revill - currently on 32 league goals! Steel City could still catch them but they need to win their remaining matches and hope Retford drop points.
This season will be the first that we will be in a position to relegate so things are pretty hot at the bottom of the tables too. On one hand its good that we now have the numbers to facilitate two-way movement but on the other it will mean losing teams that have been with us for some time which will be a sad event.
However, this is a great time in the season as (hopefully!) the end of the season can be seen in the distance and everyone's hard work both on and off the pitch pays off. Let's hope we can all sit back in the 'barbecue summer' and over a couple of chilled beers wonder what all the fuss about the winter was about!
