The league has been set up in order to try and keep some of the best footballers in this country and to also get more coverage of the sport. I think it is a great idea but in my opinion to develop and improve women’s football in this country, the most important thing we can do is improve girls' football.
I think to provide the best environment to develop talented girls, we need to scrap the league structures nationwide. I see and hear stories from leagues up and down the country of teams winning by stupid scorelines every week and teams losing by stupid scorelines every week. This means that within a couple of months there are a few teams down the bottom who stand no chance of getting up the league and there will be teams at the top that can’t be caught.
I think instead of a league there should be a tournament series. So, if there are 10 teams, instead of putting them in a league they would have 10 one-day tournaments, with every club getting to host a tournament. This would mean teams wouldn’t play every week but would have a few weeks between tournaments to prepare for the next one and there would be something to play for each month for every team. Then if you wanted to make it even more competitive, you could give a trophy to the team that wins the most tournaments.
I find girls enjoy the social side of football, so would much more enjoy a day long tournament than just going to a league game and going straight home. At these tournaments the league or County FA could also attend and lay on coaching opportunities for girls, like these Tesco Skills coaches. With each club getting to host a tournament it would also provide them with a chance to raise money, get publicity and recruit players which would benefit the girls currently in the team.
I think this structure would also encourage coaches to experiment and try different things instead of just having one game on a weekend where all they care about is getting three points. In a one day tournament coaches would have to play all their players to keep girls fresh, instead of just leaving them on the sidelines like they may do for league games.
I believe girls football needs to stay competitive but I think you can have competition without someone having to be bottom of a league. As to me a league where there are teams who end the season with no points and teams that end on maximum points isn’t competitive football. There are girls who care so much for football and try so hard, that play for these bottom teams who are loyal to them and I don’t think they deserve to go through their entire season with nothing to play for and being brandished the bottom team. It’s not their fault that they don’t play for the best team and I think more needs to be done for these girls.
I think this plan would make girls football different to boys, encourage more girls to stay in the sport and encourage more girls to take up the sport. If we are truly interested in improving women’s football, this is where we need to start.
