Interview: Alex Scott (Boston Breakers/ England) Part 1

Hot on the heels of flagging down Super Kelly Smith for a chat, Claire Forrester traps the flying full back...

Here is part one of the cool Alex Scott Q&A (we know, what teases we are!). Handy note, if you are of a nervous disposition, it's probably best not to sit too near to her on a plane... :

How are you enjoying the season with Boston?

This season is very different to last season with Boston. Last year I was new to the whole experience and did not know what to expect, this year I'm much more settled into things. It has also been hard for us as a team this year because we went for a long stretch without winning but playing really well. We have a great group of girls on the team and we contiued to work hard everyday in training and it seems we have finally turned a corner.... I HOPE!

How do you feel the season has gone so far for you personally?

I have found it very different this year and more challenging personally. Last year I was kind of a surpise package, not many coaches in the league knew about my game and my strengths as an attacking full back, so I was kind of free and had a big impact in the league. This year, however, coaches have set out their play to stop me as an attacking player, as well as the other big personalities in our team. As much as this is a compliment to my game, it's something that I have not dealt with before and have to try and adjust too. I think I still have time to pop up with some assists or maybe a goal or two!

Are you looking forward to the  England v Turkey match?

Yes, I always look forward to pulling the England shirt on and playing for my country. Even more so when it's on home soil and my family and freinds get to come along and see me play. This is also an important game for the team, if we get the 3 points we will secure top spot in the group and will go to the playoffs and be a step closer to the World Cup. I am lucky that I got to experience the World Cup in China in 2007, and that has left me with the hunger and desire to make sure, as a team, that we get to the next one

Does the constant travelling back and forth from England to the USA not get on your nerves? How do you cope with the long journeys and please tell us that you get to fly business class!

Hahaha.... I wish I got to fly Business class! If there is ANYONE reading this that can hook that up for me, please get in touch, ha! I would not say it gets on my nerves, because travelling back to play for England is major. If it was not for me playing for England I probably would not be playing in the WPS now, so I always have to remember what got me here. I am, however, a really nervous flyer. So travelling back all the time is a bit of a process for me, because I think I give myself mini heart attacks every time I set foot on a plane. The slightest bump and you will hear a scream or a look of pure terror on my face.

It must be worth it to be playing professionally, did you ever imagine that you would be a professional footballer? How does it feel?

I have never envisaged myself doing anything else but playing football. Growing up, however, I never thought it would be something I would be able to make ends meet from and always knew I would have to have something else in my life to support my income. To be able to wake up everyday and just play and concentrate on football for my job is a dream come true. The sad thing is, I know nothing lasts forever. I know how lucky I am to have this oppurtunity and I will contiue to enjoy every minute of it while it lasts.

Are there any downsides to being a professional footballer?

Not that I can think of! Maybe missing out on family time or when there are  family parties I always seem to be away playing football or across the world. I try to make up for that when I am home though. I also got tickets to see Rihanna in Boston next month, which I was very excited about, but then our WPS fixures got changed and we now have a game in Philly.... Rihanna will have to wait for next time, ha.
